Langston Hughes spurns Countee Cullen

New York based Steven Watson wrote the best introduction to the #harlemrenaissance in print, Harlem Renaissance: Hub of African-American Culture. While in New York, I interviewed him in his Upper West Side apartment about the HR in general and, specifically, the queer aspects of that movement. Steven is Old School and has his reservations about the label #queerharlemrenaissance, but he has the historical goods, as the excerpt about the frustrated friendship between #langstonhughes and #counteecullen will illustrate. His books are a wonderful mixture of historical overview, intellectual history, contextualization of the players, and more than a dash of gossip. #gay #africanamericanliterature #friendship #africanamericans #lgbtq
